AUTODESK SHIPS RELEASE 12 FOR THE MACINTOSH
SAUSALITO, Calif. -- July 20, 1993 -- Autodesk announced today that
AutoCADr Release 12 for the Macintosh is now available. "I believe this product
is our finest Macintosh product ever," said John Lynch, vice president of
Autodesk's Product Development Group.
The greatly enhanced features and unprecedented performance of AutoCAD
Release 12, combined with the Macintoshr platform, offer Macintosh users as
well as pencil-based drafters and designers the advantages of the world's best-
selling desktop CAD program. "This Macintosh version of AutoCAD is very easy to
master and it provides the power and productivity needed by architects and
engineers who favor the Macintosh platform," said Lynch. "The Apple Macintosh
personal computer is an important platform for Autodesk, and this fully
compatible version of AutoCAD represents a strengthening of our commitment to
the Macintosh user."
"Traditional Macintosh and AutoCAD users alike will appreciate the elegant
combination of these two products that unites the power of Macintosh with the
new features and look of AutoCAD Release 12," said Bob Puette, president of
Apple Computer, Inc., U.S.A. "By taking advantage of the Macintosh ease of use
and connectivity, we believe AutoCAD Release 12 for the Macintosh will boost
CAD users' productivity and promote the sharing of ideas and information
between applications and departments."
AutoCAD Release 12 for the Macintosh includes all key AutoCAD Release 12
features, including support for the Advanced Modeling Extensionr (AMEr),
AutoCAD Development SystemTM (ADS), AutoCAD Visualization Extension (AVE),
AutoCAD SQL InterfaceTM (ASI), AutoCAD SQL ExtensionTM (ASE), Autodesk Device
InterfaceTM (ADIr), AutoLISPr and 8-bit fonts.
Features specific to the Macintosh platform include:
A substantial increase in speed. For example, internal benchmarks
show the following increases in performance
over AutoCAD Release 11 for Macintosh:
ADS 5 to 100 times faster
AutoLISP execution up to 20 percent faster
AutoLISP loading up to 300 percent faster
Zoom and redraw up to 50 percent faster
Enhanced GUI menus and dialog boxes
User-customizable tools palette (for icons and characters)
Interactive status and coordinate display line
Support for icon and text menus
Support for AppleShare networks
Support for PICT file format
Copy and paste and text scrolling capabilities in the
graphics command lines area
Use of ADB digitizer as a system mouse (mole mode)
New 32-bit display-list driver for enhanced drawing performance
Enhanced capabilities for copying and pasting graphics,
both within AutoCAD and between AutoCAD
and other Macintosh applications
A drag and drop feature that allows users to open drawings or run
scripts by simply dragging documents into AutoCAD
Licensed technology from Appler the Shared Library Manager that
dynamically loads ADS applications and Threads, a scheduler
that speeds up ADS applications
AutoCAD Release 12 for the Macintosh runs on the Macintosh QuadraTM series
700, 800, 900 and 950; Macintosh CentrisTM 650; Macintosh IIci, IIcx, IIvx,
IIfx, IIsi and IIx; Macintosh SE/30 and LCIII under the Apple operating system,
Version 7.1 or higher. All models must have a math coprocessor and a monitor
that supports at least 640 x 480 pixel resolution.
The suggested retail price of AutoCAD Release 12 for the Macintosh is
US$3,750. Current users of Release 10 can upgrade to Release 12 for US$700, and
current users of Release 11 can upgrade for US$500. Education and international
(including Canadian) prices for Autodesk products and upgrades may vary. For
